Day 1

Julia and I have finally made it to Africa! We wake up on the plane to the sights of Cape Town and Table Mountain.

We collect our bags, grab a SIM card for my phone, and then call our Uber to head to our hotel for the next 5 nights, the Cape Heritage Hotel.
We are greeted by an amazingly warm and helpful staff. They definitely know the town and gave us great recommendations the whole time we were there. In fact the first one was given within 30 minutes of us arriving. We had planned to hike Table Mountain, but a few days later. One of the staff, TJ, told us to not wait and go that day. Cape Town is notorious for fickle weather, so since it was on the day of our arrival, head up now, because there may be no other chance. So we heeded his advice and went to change. Once we got to Table Mountain, we knew we had made the right choice.

Once we had eaten our lunch, it was off to hike Platteklip Gorge. This was the “quickest” route, but also the most vertical. Julia and I had to stop to take many breathers and definitely did not bring enough water (pro tip, bring more than 1.5L of water!). While it was a grueling hike, the views along the way were great.
Once we reached the summit though, we quickly forgot the pains of the hike as we were surrounded by beauty.

This was our first up close experience with the flora and fauna of South Africa and we couldn’t get enough of it.

The above creature is called a Dassie and is apparently the closest related animal to elephants. Crazy how something so small is the cousin of something so large, but these guys must know it because they love the spotlight.

We then headed down, but instead of hiking back down, we grabbed a beer and took the cable car. This afforded us with some more great views.

Once down, we headed back to our hotel for a shower and dinner. Anyone who has heard me talk about travels knows that I heavily rely on Lonely Planet and that’s what I turned to our first dinner. It sent me to an Ethiopian restaurant just a few blocks away called Addis in Cape. Julia had never had Ethiopian food before and boy was it a great first time!

Day 2

We were a bit sleep deprived and sore after our hike, so we slept in and missed breakfast. No worries though as in our hotel is a great restaurant called Chefs Warehouse & Canteen. The chef travels the world and has dishes from all over the world in his fixed price offerings. It was amazing meal.
